Happy July Royal Fam!
In celebrating my recent travels to Bali to source more one of a kind, handmade goodies for the upcoming QAC webstore Fall relaunch ... This week’s Daily Fashion Fix style post is a dope cultural spin on an old classic - "The Fanny Pack."
Quick flashback - True 80's and 90’s style consisted of an explosion of color and inspiration from what mainstream fashion pundits now call “urban style culture.” From “Round the Way Girls” sporting neon biker shorts and big hoop earrings in LL Cool J’s summertime rap video anthem.
To baggy pants and crop tops made famous by singing & fashion icon Aaliyah ... The message of hip-hop style at time was all about storytelling and celebrating the beauty and ingenuity of black and brown people ... Many of which transformed a history of pain and disenfranchisement to craft incredible art from their respective cultures / backgrounds.
A classic example of this can be seen with the creations of Dapper Dan. A designer originally shut out of exclusive fashion houses due to bias and elitism, he gain inspiration from the people of his Harlem neighborhood to create subversive yet legendary pieces which ultimately became the quintessential luxury street style look of the era.
Today, as terms like “street luxe” become increasingly popular and black and brown clientele, who once found themselves overtly excluded from upscale brands, are slowly being included and courted for their buying power .. It’s important to remember this styles origins. Invented out of necessity, urban 80's and 90's era fashion forged an entirely unique style paradigm which ultimately shifted fashion culture as we know it.
In this week’s featured look, I take one of the hallmark pieces of that decade ... Wearing it with a fresh global twist - The fanny pack. Once thought to be the accessory of choice for un-hip suburban moms in the late ‘80s & early ‘90s, Today, fanny packs have found a new life with 90's / 2000's babies and trend-spotting fashionistas.
This particular fanny pack was discovered by sheer accident while on my way back to my hotel in the Ubud neighborhood on Bali, Indonesia. On a colorful side street, inside an unmarked storefront, I came across local artisan Yanti and her incredible house of leather. In true bag lady style, I wanted to source the entire store and take it all back to Qatar with me. I mean, who can turn down an entire collection on leather bags, harnesses, and fanny packs of all shapes and sizes?? Did I mention they’re all made from 100% genuine leather, some with snake skin accents and sturdy brass fixtures?!?!
Like tell me. HOW do you only choose a small few? *cries* .. LOL, sorry Peta!
Realizing I could only select a small few, I hand picked two of the rarer pieces. This rocker, black fanny pack was one of them! As you all know from my earlier style write up on investing in quality pieces .. I absolutely live for exclusive closet finds which are well made and hard to find nearly anywhere else!
