Weekends are made for late mornings, heavy breakfasts, and strolls through your favorite park with friends. Unfortunately, life isn't always that relaxed and dreamy. Often times, in the midst of hunting down my next weekend mimosa, I'm also running around the city trying to wrap up personal tasks before Monday. Even working on your passion takes energy! On those weekends when you're completely exhausted from the week before and the laundry pile is starting to touch the ceiling, how do you make it out the door without saying "screw it" and going naked? LOL!
Since it's winter, this is when I pull out my spring and summer clothes! That's right, those off-season clothes you've packed away could be just what you need to pull a quick weekend look together without tons of effort. All you need are a few colorful pieces that can be layered up or down depending on the weather. If you're stuck on where to begin, no worries, my "Ghanaian Color Pop" tutorial lists my fool proof tips / tricks to add fun bits color to any outfit.
Case in point, here, I started with one of my favorite head-wraps (from Benin, West Africa) containing a mixture sandy tans and browns. After foraging in the closet, I found this cute faux suede, fringe detailed dress from earlier this summer. Perfect! I can quickly layer this with almost anything ... In this case a sleek leather jacket in one of my favorite colors (oxblood) for the past three seasons. Also, by now you know that for me? ... No outfit is complete until I add my personal touches of culture! Today, in addition to my headwrap, I decided to throw on my Adinkra symboled necklace (inspired by my Ghanaian heritage) as well as an onyx stoned bracelet decorated with Turkish miniature coins (some say these coins give the wearer good luck). Then, to mix up the color pallet, I added a pair of comfy high-waisted denim shorts cuffed at the hem ... Again, winterized with thick navy tights and a simple pair of pirate boots.
Finally, the star of the show was this amazeballs vintage leather knapsack from the early 1990's. The deep caramel color no only pulls together the tan head-scarf and the leather of the jacket, but it pops so well against the stonewashed denim and deep navy tights. As I've said, some days the the fashion diva comes easily, on other days when it's hectic and the last thing you want to do is figure out what to wear ... A quick repurposing job in your closet, might just the help you need!
