This week in Daily Fashion Fix, I wanted to showcase a bit of my contemporary looks through the lens of whats called "Street Style." Briefly said, Street Style is a compilation of personal style aesthetic. Often mixed with a splash of art, It's a form of self expression, where fashion is the medium to which the wearer can fully buck the status quo of style rules to create a look all their own. Be it hard and edgy ... over the top, loud, and colorful ... soft and playful ... Street Style is the place where the stuffy fashion expectations go to die ... Or at least it should. In recent years, Street Style has begun to trade in its rebellious edginess for glossy magazine covers and runway features. The following op-ed piece within the Business of Fashion goes on to discuss the ongoing changes within street style culture.
Personally, Street Style offers me the opportunity to play with my look and facets of my personality. Rather than my "girly" norm, instead, I'm able to experiment with slouchier fits, bolder fabrics, & menswear. A perfect example of this can be seen in my prior "Fashion Fix" post "Modern Kente." In today's feature, I continue to play my femininity against traditionally "male" looks to create a feel all my own.
In this feature I'm wearing vintage leather slacks paired with a simple desert boot. Both great individually, but together, they create a monochromed silhouette that adds a sleek punch to this ensemble. In keeping with the vintage 1980's theme, the sweater featured here depicts Sesame Street character Elmo as "Mookie" (which I affectionately call "Elmookie" lol) from Spike Lee's poignant film "Do the Right Thing." Discussing tense race relations is 1980's Brooklyn, having this blog shoot take place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an epicenter of current tension and gentrification is somewhat ironic & telling in that, as in fashion ... the more things change, the more they remain the same.
